5better than 'name-brand' alarm systems
By -KC
I was searching for a DIY alarm system because I felt that the 3-sensor + monthly subscription deal that most alarm providers offer is a bit of a ripoff. I considered purchasing 2 other systems, but decided to go with Shield Tech's in the end mainly because of cost/feature comparison. A co-worker had also purchased a system from them and recommended it.

So far I'm completely happy with the product. I'm technically inclined, though never setup an alarm system before. Instructions are brief, but easy to follow and I had all my sensors programmed in under 30-minutes. The hardest part was figuring out how the house would be laid out (which door/window got a sensor, which zone #, etc). System has been up for about a week now and everything tested is working as designed.

Overall I beat the cost of going with a national service, installed the alarm exactly how I wanted to, and will be able to add more components quickly and inexpensively. Perfect :)

5Great Alarm System
By Jonathon Mehlberg
I recently had a break in and decided I needed to add an alarm system to protect from future problems. After shopping around for prices with local alarm companies, I started looking at the possibility of doing a self monitoring system. There are a lot of options around on the web, but many have confusing manuals with very poor translations and additional parts typically need to be ordered from China or Hong Kong. I finally settled on Shield Tech's offering because their prices were good and there was full US based support.

The shipment came very fast and was well packed. The product itself seems to be good quality and the instructions were very easy to follow. I don't have a traditional land line, but have a number with the nettalk device. This alarm works just fine with the VOIP connection and has been very reliable during all of my tests.

Setup and installation were a breeze and I've already ordered several additional components to secure my basement as well.

My only slight gripe about the system is that the phone system is a bit buggy. When the alarm calls a number it seems to begin playing the message before I actually pick up the phone, so when I answer the message is already in progress. This is a very minor issue since the message repeats and I don't really need to hear the message to know it is from my alarm. Also you have to be very careful when selection options in the phone tree or inputting the user code over the phone since pressing numbers too fast or too slow seems to confuse the system. Once you know the optimal rate, things work as expected.

If you want to use an answering machine on the same phone line as the alarm, you aren't able to maintain the ability to call into the alarm. This doesn't matter to me since I only use the line for the alarm, but it is worth noting in case this matters for someone.

All in all, I am very happy with the system and have no problems recommending it to anyone who is looking for a self monitored alarm system. Even if you want a monitored system, they offer an inexpensive monitoring solution, though I have no experience with that.

5Excellent Alarm System
By Juan Mercedes
The home alarm system is excellent itself. It very easy to install and setup. I love the addins you can purchase form their site. I fell very secure when I'm in or out of my home. The only con i can mention is the blinking lights on the contacts i have gotten used to it blinking all night but my wife hates it.
