3Useful but not a Full Security System
By Deborah Levinson
This unit is very simple to install. I had it up and running in no time at all, the directions were fairly clear, and what wasn't clear was pretty obvious without the need to refer to the directions.

It doesn't take a lot of room, and I was able to find a good, out of the way, location for it, without having to do any rearranging.

I liked the handy feature of being able to carry the "fob" with me, and tested out the "emergency" alarm a few times, much to the dismay of the grandkids.

While this is not a good substitute for a professionally installed system, this is a super mini system, and I found it was very good for making sure that the kids know to stay out of "our room" as they're now too old to fall for the "we have a video monitoring system installed, you just can't see it" routine anymore.

For keeping out intruders, this is more like a dog barking, in that they might leave when they hear an alarm, but if I'm not home to call the police, and they choose to continue into the house, this is not going to dissuade them from doing so.

The system is expandable, which is also a nice feature, but as noted above, since it cannot be tied into making an emergency call, it is most useful for keeping kids out of rooms in which they don't belong, scaring off easily dissuaded intruders, or alerting you that somebody is trying to enter your home, giving you a bit extra notice to phone the authorities.

5Perfect Solution for Travel Security
By javajunki
I was absolutely thrilled when this came up for review! We enjoy camping via a travel trailer but often stay in different locations...some feel much more secure than others and at times, we have hesitated to take long hikes or leave the camp site for extended periods of time.

As anyone that spends much time in an RV or travel trailer knows, the locks leave a LOT to be desired. They are downright flimsy and often "keyed" with generic versions that can be opened by nearly anyone. Of course, camping often entails other items like camera equipment, telescope, etc...some of which we have a modestly significant investment in preserving.

We wanted something that was easy to install, inexpensive, loud enough to attract attention and wireless. This was close to perfect for our needs! The key fobs were a big plus that we both appreciate as a type of extra little personal alert alarm - wonderful for camping since we always have our keys with us (hopefully!).

I'm not mechanically inclined but even I was able to install with ease. The instructions are readable...not the best but certainly not the worst. This is a small unit so installation in a tiny travel trailer where every inch of space is at a premium was quite feasible.

While I wouldn't want to rely upon this as an primary security system, it is excellent for out-buildings, campers/RV/travel trailers, garage or other areas in need of an audible alert. The sound is loud enough to attract attention but of course, it cannot call the police or record any intruders...only act as an alert.

The key fobs really set this apart in my opinion. They are a very nice addition and our favorite feature of this terrific little set. I like the fact it is expandable although the current size was perfect for our use at the moment. Overall, great solution for travel trailers, out buildings and other small security alert needs!

4Good ALERT system but more of a Placebo
By Kaio
UPDATE: Just expanded my system with the Garage Door Sensor. Check my review there if you're interested.

This system is more of an alert device than an alarm -- meaning, it will alert you of an intruder IF you're home to hear it, but it won't do much else if no one is home to confront them.

It's debatable if this glorified smoke alarm would deter an intruder from stealing anything in your house; it might startle them momentarily, but they won't necessarily turn around and run away. Plus, the effectiveness of the alert sound will depend on where the base unit is placed; it needs to be centrally located so all the intrusion/motion sensors will work, yet optimally located where the alert can be most effective. This raises a tricky question: are you just trying to alert yourself when home, or are you hoping someone outside will hear the alert and come to the rescue? Either way, it's highly debatable whether or not it's loud enough to alert any passers-by that a crime is taking place. And even if anyone did hear it, would they even care? We've all ignored annoying car alarms, and they blast alarm sounds much louder than this device.

Batteries Not Included

I'm not a fan of products that don't include batteries. I know it's not uncommon, but I don't think its asking much that they toss in a few generic AAAs and a 9volt to get you going. I highly doubt the minimal cost justifies the inconvenience to the customer, and the oversight doesn't make a great first impression in my book. But setting that pet peeve aside...

Easy Setup

Entering my own security code into the number pad on the base unit was very easy. I did refer to the Quick Start guide just to make sure I was doing it right, but I pretty much was able to get everything going on my own just by fiddling around with it. That's a huge plus in my book, because I'm a believer in electronics that are intuitive to use and not needlessly complicated.

This model comes with 2 door/window sensors to get you going and the base unit can handle up to 8 more sensors, so the entire system is expandable. It can even accommodate room motion sensors which will alert you of any unwanted movement.

Cool Placebo

There is a cool factor to this product; it's kinda neat to be able to setup my own security system relatively inexpensively. But like most insurance policies, you're buying into a false sense of safety to some degree. Remember -- this is just a glorified smoke alarm, not a full-fledged security system where your knight in shining armor will come screeching up to save you with flashing lights on the roof of their hero-mobile. That said, I can see some interesting uses for this. The instructions mentioned using it on a wine cellar door, which might be interesting if you want to keep curious minors out. Or maybe a motion sensor could be used to alert you if a pet goes into a room they're not supposed to. Or a sensor could be placed outside on a shed door or something. This unit does have some interesting applications.

Bottom Line -- This is a cool device that looks a lot like a full-fledged Brinks security alarm. But just know what you're buying here -- it's a personal Alert system, likely best used to wake you up to unwanted activity while you're home to do something about it. In and of itself, that's perfectly fine. Just don't delude yourself into thinking you're going to "arm" this system via keypad or the wireless remote, then leave for work or on vacation thinking this is going to protect your house from any intruders bent on stealing your stuff. It wouldn't be fair to judge this product based on the same criteria as a true, bona fide security system -- but for what it is, I'm giving it 4 stars.
